"Computational Global Optimization in Nonlinear Systems," by János Pintér, presents a concise, practical introduction to models and algorithms that enable the analysis and solution of nonlinear decision problems in the presence of multiple optima. Such problems arise in many areas of engineering, economics and sciences.

This book places a special emphasis upon computational aspects. First, a brief review of frequently used global optimization models and methods is provided, then software development and performance testing issues are highlighted. This is followed by a discussion of several illustrative examples which are based on real-world applications. The LGO integrated modeling and solver system is introduced and used to solve these examples. The corresponding demonstration program files are also made available. A list of references (that mainly consists of recent books and Web sites) is also included.

About the Author:

János D. Pintér is a research scientist and president of Pintér Consulting Services, Inc. as well as adjunct professor at Dalhousie University, both in Halifax, NS, Canada. He was born in Budapest, Hungary. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Sciences (Eötvös University, Budapest, 1973), a Ph.D. in Operations Research/Applied Probability from Moscow State University (Moscow, 1982), and a D.Sc. in Mathematics from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Budapest, 1999).

Dr. Pintér's research interests include nonlinear optimization, integrated decision support systems development and a broad range of applications. He has written three books (including the present work), more than 130 research articles and technical reports, and has been editor, technical editor of and contributing author to several books. He is author of "Global Optimization in Action" (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996), winner of the 2000 INFORMS Computing Society Prize for Research Excellence, and developer of the professional LGO software for global/nonlinear optimization.
