With this year's anniversary, it seems like an appropriate time to look back and ask "What have we done?" My own files go back to the year 1979-1980. A quick perusal reveals the following speakers: John Geanakoplos (1995), Tom Spencer and Tony Brigandi, 1993 Edelman finalists (1994), Stephen Roach (1993), Harry Markowitz (1992), Thomas Cook (1990), H. Newton Garber (1989, 1984), Peter Norden (1988, 1983), John Little (1987, 1980), Lawrence Chimerine (1986), Allen Sinai (1985), Arnoldo Hax (1985), Herb Ayres (1984, 1980), Gerald Hoffman (1983), Martin Starr (1981), Wassily Leontif (1981), Franz Edelman (1981) and many more. (My apologies to those luminaries whose names I missed during a quick perusal of my files.)
Regrettably, the records for the period 1955 to 1979 are lost. It would be nice to see what the founders were doing in the early years of the Chapter's formation. Although our recent history includes a long list of household names in management science and operations research, our speakers over the years have been practitioners in the field. This reflects the membership of practitioners and academics interested in the practice side of our field.
As we move into our 41st year, we find ourselves asking again as we do every year: "What will we do this year? Who will we invite to speak?" Already we are off to a star-studded start. Rangu Selgame (NYNEX), a 1995 Franz Edelman Prize finalist, spoke in September on the Arachne Network Planning System and John Little will speak on Marketing Engineering in October, followed by Dr. Richard Werbin (Chase Manhattan Bank) who will speak on Lotus Notes in Support of Decision Systems. For the rest of the year, stay tuned. Or better yet, call me at (212) 787-1975, or one of the Chapter officers to find out more.
- G. Jack Theurer
Chapter President
On Nov. 15, 1995, the New York Chapter will sponsor a session on "Lotus Notes in Support of Decision Systems." Dr. Richard Werbin, vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank and banking representative of the International Lotus Notes Corporate Consortium, will speak on the uses of Lotus Notes at Chase. Dr. Werbin was responsible for introducing and implementing Notes at Chase.
The Chapter will hold an informal MS/OR discussion panel on Dec. 13. Members are invited to bring and discuss business technical problems.
The chapter is planning to have a marketing meeting on Feb. 21, 1996, and a finance meeting on March 20, 1996. On June 19, 1996, there will be a panel discussion of "Making/Getting/Keeping Your Job in a Dynamic Environment."
