Mark Atchison, Managing Partner

Company Description:

The genesis of QuantMethods reaches to 1988, when the partners teamed to creates software to accompany introductory Management Science college textbooks. That software, called Decision Support Software (DSS), was a DOS-based program for personal computers that was sold as a supplement to several Management Science texts. In the late 1990's it became apparent that the market demanded browser-based applications that could run in a variety of environments. In that time period a trend towards distance learning also developed, as did the movement towards highly interactive electronic coursework. Realizing the opportunity presented by the convergence of these trends, the partners founded QuantMethods in 2003 to create software packages that address these emerging market needs.

The software has been adopted at schools as varied as Alcorn State University, Texas Christian University, Stephen F. Austin State University, and Comenius University in Bratislava. The software is used internationally, with subscriptions in Brazil, China, Slovakia, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Mexico, as well as in the United States.

Product Description:

Quantitative Methods for Production Operations Research (QMpom) and Quantitative Methods for Management Science (QMms) are the primary software products of QuantMethods. Both share a common platform, which is an n-tiered, java-based decision science application. QMms (formerly QMS) has been well-received in the academic community, as evidenced by the formal review printed in the October 2006 issue of ORMS Today (article available online at http://www.lionhrtpub.com/orms/orms-10-06/frswr.html).

We believe that QMpom and QMms represent the premier model-based decision science software in the educational market. Both applications are designed as pedagogical tools that allow the student to focus on formulating Decision Science optimization problems without the burden of the onerous calculations involved in solving a Decision Science optimization model. More specifically, the software is:

  • professional-grade software, with intuitive ease of use and in conformance with prevalent user interface conventions;
  • an Internet application, accessible through popular browsers;
  • run under a variety of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X and Unix;
  • primarily sold as a subscription for the right to use the software over the Internet, at a price-point of one-half the market price for similar software sold on an end-user license basis;
  • extensible in order to continually add new modules as market demands dictate;
  • efficient with machine resources and offers robustness in the size of problems that can be modeled and solved; and
  • capable of being private labeled (branded).
