Operations Research Engineer

The Operations Research teams at DHL Express functions as internal consulting groups providing quantitative analysis and decision support throughout the company. Assignments will typically involve analysis and modeling of operational situations with an end goal of developing quantitative data-driven recommendations for the Executive Management team.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will involve many different facets of strategic planning including: vehicle route planning, forecasting, network design, capacity planning, location open/close, and similar projects.

The OR Engineer develops and implements mathematical/statistical models with the primary objective of reducing cost and increasing efficiency of pickup and delivery operations at DHL. The OR Engineer partners with the appropriate business units to create value through excellence in advanced analytics, modeling, and quantitative techniques.

Advanced applicants would provide focused leadership that challenges the status-quo by proposing, designing, and conducting studies that evaluate potential modifications and enhancements to the existing methodologies.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in quantitative field such as Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years experience in building and validating advanced applied mathematical models. Experience in Transportation, Airline, Warehousing or related industries. Experience in the small package industry is a plus. Candidates with longer experience will be considered for advanced position levels.
  • Solid expertise in applied mathematical modeling, linear/mixed-integer programming, optimization, forecasting, statistics, simulation, and related quantitative techniques.
  • Strong ability to conduct analysis of data integrity and assessment of impact of input quality to forecasts and optimization results.
  • Strong knowledge in modeling and optimization packages such as AIMMS, AMPL, CPLEX, and XPRESS-MP.
  • Good knowledge of programming languages such as Visual Basic, C++ and statistical languages such as R. Good working knowledge of Linux/UNIX and MS Windows. Good working knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl. Knowledge of database and SQL is a plus.
  • Understand and manage complexity and information. Creativity and innovatively develop solutions to solve complex business problems.
  • Ability to think strategically — understands the big picture, identifies the desired end-state of the modeling activities, and develops/executes a solution road map.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the business.
