OR/MS Today Industry News Posted: 2/16/06 ILOG Releases CPLEX 10.0, OPL 4.2 The release of ILOG CPLEX 10 and its companion product ILOG OPL Development Studio 4.2 marks a major step forward for ILOG. Once again, ILOG has delivered advances in performance and model development precision and ease of use. The two releases also feature improved support for automatic relaxations in over-constrained models and a new algorithm for finding conflicts. ILOG CPLEX 10 provides several performance improvements. For a set of difficult LP problems, CPLEX 10 has improved the time to optimality on average by 20 percent with the Primal Simplex algorithm and 20 percent with the Barrier Optimizer. CPLEX 10 has improved the speed to optimality on average by 35 percent for MILP models. For particularly difficult models, the improvements average 70 percent. A particular performance feature that is worth examining is the new algorithm Solution Polishing. Solution Polishing is a new CPLEX heuristic used to boost performance on certain types of models, in particular complex and difficult MIP models with time limits. OPL in turn boosts model-building speed by 20 percent a separate advancement further reducing end to end time when OPL and CPLEX are used together. ILOG OPL Development Studio 4.2 exposes new tools to help you analyze the source of the infeasibility in a model. Those tools include CPLEX Conflict Refiner for detecting minimal sets of mutually contradictory bounds and constraints, and CPLEX FeasOpt for automatically repairing infeasibilities. Given an infeasible model, the Conflict Refiner can identify contradictory constraints and bounds within the model to help you locate the causes of the infeasibility. The Conflict Refiner can work on any type of problem, even mixed integer programs (MIP) and those containing quadratic elements (QP or QCP). CPLEX and OPL are two components in ILOG's Optimization Decision Management System (ODMS), which supports all aspects of optimization model-based application development and execution. In addition to CPLEX and OPL, ODMS contains the ILOG CP constraint programming engines for complex scheduling and routing problems, as well as ILOG Optimization Decision Manager (ODM) for fast development of decision support applications that feature extensive support for what-if analysis, goal programming and scenario comparison by business users. ILOG ODMS makes optimization more widely accessible than ever before. For more information see http://cplex10.ilog.com.
