OR/MS Today INFORMS News Posted: 6/12/05 Call for Nominations Bonder Scholarships: Health and Military Applications The Health Applications Section and the Military Applications Society of INFORMS invite applications from qualified doctoral candidates for the Bonder Scholarship for Applied Operations Research in Health Services and the Bonder Scholarship for Applied Operations Research in Military Applications, respectively. Doctoral candidates, particularly those at the beginning of their programs with an interest in the application of process modeling and O.R. analyses to issues in health care design, delivery or operations, are encouraged to apply for the health services scholarship. Doctoral candidates with an interest in the application of process modeling and O.R. analyses to military issues are encouraged to apply for the military applications scholarship. Both scholarships provide funding of $5,000. Each scholarship consists of a grant of $4,000 as well as up to $1,000 of travel funding to support their participation in relevant activities at the annual INFORMS conference. INFORMS will waive registration fees for awardees. The tenure of the award is one year. The scholarships will be granted on the basis of excellence, innovation, preparation and probability of the candidate's success. Candidates should submit three copies of the following materials: a curriculum vita, two letters of support, a brief statement describing why they are interested in applying operations research to health care or military issues, respectively, and a two-page summary of their proposed program of research. Candidates will be evaluated on the quality of their preparation to undertake a program of applied operations research in their respective field. The proposed program of research will be judged according to its potential for making a significant contribution to the respective field of applied O.R., as well as the likelihood of successful completion. Students pursuing doctoral studies in health services operations research, military operations research and related disciplines are eligible. VRI is recognized for its quality and innovations in applying O.R. to public and private sector enterprises. Bonder has made major contributions to the operations research profession. He has served as president of the Operations Research Society of America and the Military Operations Research Society, and as vice president of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Patriotic Service Award from the U.S. Secretary of the Army, the George E. Kimball Medal and the INFORMS President's Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. WORMS Award for the Advancement of Women in OR/MS The WORMS Award celebrates and recognizes a person who has contributed significantly to the advancement and recognition of women in the field of operations research and the management sciences. Each nominee will be considered based on his or her history of successfully promoting the professional development, success and recognition of women in OR/MS. Nominees can have made contributions in multiple ways, such as primarily at their own institutions or through involvement in professional organizations. Examples of activities to be considered include, but are not limited to, the following: personal commitment and/or leadership with respect to increased hiring, retention, advancement and recognition of women (students and faculty) in academia, industry or government; leadership in encouraging, sponsoring and/or developing professional training/development programs for women in OR/MS; creating an environment that supports women's full participation and advancement in the field of OR/MS, possibly through mentoring, leadership, financial support and/or personal investment of time. INFORMS Transportation Science & Logistics Dissertation Prize Competition Nominations are invited for the 2005 Dissertation Prize Competition sponsored by the INFORMS Section on Transportation Science & Logistics. This award is the oldest and most prestigious honor for doctoral dissertations in the transportation science and logistics area. The prize will be awarded Nov. 14 at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The award is accompanied by a certificate and a $1,000 honorarium. EURO Excellence in Practice Award The EURO Excellence in Practice Award is designed to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the practice of operational research, attract more application-oriented papers to EURO conferences and promote the practice of operational research in general. All interested authors are invited to submit published papers describing an application of operational research that has original features, whether in methodology, application or implementation. The papers must not have been submitted concurrently to another competition. Papers not yet published also do not qualify. The application is open to operational research specialists from any part of the world. The criteria for the evaluation of the papers are: scientific quality of the paper, relevance to operational research, originality in methodology, implementations and/ or field of application, a real impact to practice and appreciation by the organization involved with the application. The jury will select a short list of finalist papers that will be presented in a special session of the EURO Conference. There is no registration fee for one author of each of the finalist papers. The winner will be determined by the jury at the end of the special session and will be announced by the chairman of the jury during the closing session of the EURO Conference. The prize consists of a certificate of excellence in O.R. practice plus 3,000 euros.
