Call for Entries: Franz Edelman Award

INFORMS and CPMS, the Practice Section of INFORMS, are pleased to announce the 33rd International Competition for the Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. The 2004 competition will occur as a regular session of the INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice.

Entry requirements are simple: Send us a one- or two-page summary document that describes what you accomplished, in just enough detail to let us judge the appropriateness of your work for the competition, and a 60-word abstract of the achievement.

Entries should report on a completed, practical application, and must describe results that had significant, verifiable and preferably quantifiable impact on the performance of the client organization. Finalist work will be published in the January-February 2005 issue of Interfaces.

Any work you have done in recent years is eligible, unless it has already been described by a Franz Edelman Award finalist. Previous publication of the work does not disqualify it. Anyone is eligible for the competition except a member of the judging panel.

The purpose of the competition is to recognize and reward outstanding examples of OR/MS in practice. The prize is awarded for implemented work, not for a submitted paper or for the presentation describing the work. The client organization that used the winning work receives a prize citation; the authors receive a cash award.

Key milestone dates for the competition:

  • Summary of your achievement (one or two double-spaced 8 1/2" x 11" pages) and a 60-word abstract are due Oct. 24.
  • Finalists will be selected based on the summaries, any other written materials submitted, and the verification process by Jan. 2, 2004.
  • A full written paper will be due from each finalist by March 12, 2004.
  • Each finalist group will give an oral presentation of their work in the special competition session (which will be videotaped) as a regular track of the 2004 INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice on April 26, 2004, in Cambridge, Mass.
  • The judges will determine the winner or winners after the presentations and the results will be announced at the 2004 INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice on April 27, 2004, in Cambridge, Mass.

All papers submitted by finalists become the property of INFORMS. Transmittal of a cash award to a finalist is contingent on the finalist delivering to INFORMS/CPMS a paper that meets normal publication standards and on making an encore presentation of the work at the CPMS Plenary Session at the INFORMS annual meeting in 2004 in Denver.

For electronic submission, e-mail to: tspencer@adm.njit.edu. For mail submission, send to: 2004 Edelman Prize Competition, Thomas Spencer III, Chair, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University Heights, Newark, NJ 07102-1982.
