In Memoriam:
Anne S. Dantzig

Anne S. Dantzig, wife of the late Stanford Professor Emeritus George B Dantzig, died of natural causes Aug. 10. She was 89.

A devoted couple, George and Anne had been married nearly 69 years when George passed away last spring. George Dantzig, a legendary figure in the O.R. community, was known as the "Father of Linear Programming."

Anne was born Feb. 20, 1917 in Baltimore, Md., to immigrant parents from Eastern Europe. From the age of 8 onwards, she worked in her parent's grocery store, manning the cash register and waiting on customers. Anne studied piano at the Peabody Conservatory and attended public schools. She graduated form the University of Maryland in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in French and a secondary school teaching credential.

In her freshman year, she met George at the University of Maryland, and they were married in August 1936. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan in Library Science. While her husband worked on his Ph.D. at U.C. Berkeley, Anne read to the blind, the job she said she found most rewarding. She worked at the Library of Congress from 1941 to 1945.

A lifelong fan of classical music, ballet and opera, Anne was also an excellent cook and entertained extensively. Among her lifelong passions were gardening, reading, keeping up with current events and crossword puzzles.

Anne is survived by son David Dantzig of Cleveland, Ohio, daughter Jessica Klass of El Cerrito, Calif., son Paul Dantzig of Scarsdale, N.Y., three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and her brother, Daniel Shaw, of Baltimore.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to American Friends of Magen David Adom (www.afmda.org) or the American Printing House for the Blind (www.aph.org).
