Symposium to Honor Saul Gass

"Operations Research in the 21st Century: A Symposium in Honor of Saul Gass' 80th Birthday" will be held Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at Van Munching Hall, University of Maryland, College Park, Md.

The symposium, sponsored by the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, is free and open to the public. Saul Gass, an INFORMS Fellow, served as the president of Operations Research Society of America (ORSA, a forerunner of INFORMS) in 1976. The list of distinguished keynote speakers:

  • Alfred Blumstein (Carnegie-Mellon), "In the Beginning: Saul Gass and Other Pioneers"

  • Richard Larson (MIT), "Looking Backwards, Looking Forwards: Reflections on Definitions of Operations Research by Morse and Kimball"

  • Thomas Magnanti (Dean of Engineering, MIT); "Learn from the Master: Saul Gass, Linear Programming and the O.R. Profession"

  • Rakesh Vohra (Northwestern), "Predicting the Unpredictable"

  • Christoph Witzgall (NIST, retired), "Recovering Circles and Spheres"

  • Karla Hoffman (George Mason University), "Explaining O.R. to Management: Letting Illustrations Tell the story — the Saul Gass Approach"

The organizing Committee, chaired by Michael Fu, includes Frank Alt and Bruce Golden.
