OR/MS Today INFORMS News Posted: 6/15/03 Combined Colloquia Nominations Due The 2003 INFORMS Combined (Doctoral and Teaching Effectiveness) Colloquia will be held Oct. 17-18 in Atlanta, immediately preceding the INFORMS Annual Meeting. The Doctoral Colloquium is comprised of two distinct tracks (Academic and Industry) and is targeted toward Ph.D. students who are near graduation. The fifth Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium, organized by the INFORM-ED and INFORMS Education Committee, is designed to address the growing concern for the quality of both undergraduate- and graduate-level OR/MS instruction. The primary objective of the Doctoral Colloquium is to promote interaction between doctoral students and professionals in operations research and management science. Approximately 20 professional participants will make presentations and lead discussions on issues and technical areas related to academic and industrial careers in operations research and management science. A complete nomination by the department must include: 1) the student's transcript at the nominating institution; 2) letter of recommendation from the department chair; 3) one-page statement of purpose from the student including description of student's research and career interests and dissertation topic; 4) mailing address and e-mail address, as well as the phone number of the nominee. The Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium will provide an opportunity for teachers of management science, operations research and operations management at any stage of professional development to pursue continuous improvement while exploring possibilities for creativity and fun in the classroom. Presenters will demonstrate how to employ case discussions, Web-based simulation exercises and PC software to teach such topics as supply chain management and optimization modeling. Undergraduate as well as graduate academic environments will be considered. All Ph.D.-granting programs in operations research and management science are invited to nominate Ph.D. students or faculty members for participation in TEC V. A complete nomination by the department must include: 1) a letter of recommendation from the department chair; 2) a transcript of Ph.D. coursework for student nominees; and 3) mailing address and e-mail address, as well as the phone number of the nominee.
