![]() October 1998 Call for Papers Focused Issue of POMS on Teaching Supply Chain Management The rise of global markets and increasingly virtual companies has focused management attention on competition between supply chains. Many schools of management and engineering are adopting integrated curricula that prepare students to design and manage the resulting complex global web of material and information flows. In recognition of these developments, Production and Operations Management will publish a focused issue on teaching supply chain management. Papers are sought which present novel approaches to teaching supply chain concepts. For example, successful uses of experiential learning such as simulations and games; the use of new cases that address supply chain issues; education activities within industry; or the collaboration of industry and academic partners. To submit a paper for publication in this focused issue, send four copies of the manuscript to one of the following issue editors: M. Eric Johnson, Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN 37203; E-mail: eric.johnson@owen.vanderbilt.edu; Phone: 615-343-7748; or David Pyke, Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755; E-mail: david.f.pyke@dartmouth.edu; Phone: 603-646-2136 Manuscripts must be received by Dec. 1. All papers will be reviewed within four months of receipt. Special Issue of Information Technology and Management Communication Networks, both wired and wireless, have emerged as the critical infrastructure necessary for the growth and survival of a modern economy. The underlying technologies and architectures experience continuing innovation making the design of these networks a challenge. The economic rationale for effective design and management of these networks is constantly being transformed by competition, new services and consumer demands for better quality of service. Further the design and management of these networks have to incorporate the uncertainties of governmental regulations and the impacts of new technology standards. This special issue of Information Technology and Management seeks leading researchers and practitioners to present quantitative models and algorithms, rigorous analysis of different cost-service trade-off, and managerial and organizational insights pertaining to the design and management of Communication Networks. The deadline for submission of articles is March 31, 1999. All papers will be peer reviewed. Details regarding paper submissions can be found at the journal's web site, http://www.baltzer.nl/itm/instruct.html. Please submit four copies of the paper to one of the guest editors: Prof. Giri Kumar Tayi, Department of Management Science and Information Systems, School of Business, SUNY at Albany, 1400 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12222; E-mail: Gk952@cnsibm.albany.edu; or Prof. Erik Rolland, Department of Accounting and MIS, Fisher College of Business, Ohio State University, 1775 College Road, Columbus, OH 43210; E-mail: rolland@cob.ohio-state.edu. IFORS Special Conferences IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies) sponsors "special conferences" or SC's to enable OR specialists to hold small (typically about 150 attendees) meetings with a minimum of red tape and bureaucracy. These conferences may be on any OR topic and may be organized independently or jointly with other professional organizations such as a national OR society or one of its subdivisions. IFORS sponsorship gives the conference international visibility and publicity in the operations research societies of countries throughout the world. Also, a special issue of ITOR, International Transactions on Operational Research, is devoted to the proceedings of each Special Conference, and each participant in the meeting receives one year's subscription to ITOR. As with all issues of ITOR, the conference papers for the special issue are refereed. IFORS welcomes proposal for special conferences. The planning begins one to two years before the conference. After initial informal contact, a proposal is submitted to the IFORS President or Vice President for meetings. Approval or further feedback can be expected within three months. In addition to evidence that the topic is of sufficient interest to attract the desired attendance, the proposal should indicate the members of the meeting committee (administrative and program), timing, location, facilities, and it should include a detailed budget. Any organizational support the committee will receive should also be addressed. The time and location of the meeting are up to the organizing committee, but IFORS prefers that an SC be scheduled so that it does not conflict with the IFORS triennial conference. Also an SC should not conflict with a national or regional conference of IFORS or its member societies. To help in budget preparation a checklist is available at http://www.ifors.org/conferences/spc-chart.html. SC's are budgeted, at a minimum, to cover all costs associated with the meeting (publicity, operational expenses, etc.) and the cost of the one year subscription to ITOR for each participant which is currently approximately $60. Arrangements for obtaining initial working funds from IFORS and for splitting of surpluses are flexible, and should be addressed in the proposal. In general, IFORS expects to share any surplus generated by an SC meeting. For further information on organizing an SC, please contact the IFORS Meeting Coordinator, Robert Abrams (rabrams@uic.edu) or the IFORS Secretary, Ms. Loretta Peregrina at the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada N6A 3K7, Canada. (E-mail: LPeregri@Ivey.uwo.ca). For a listing of the past and currently scheduled SC meetings see "Orbit" the IFORS web site at http://www.ifors.org.
