CALLS FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of Concurrent Engineering: Research and Applications

Concurrent engineering is a systematic approach to the integrated, concurrent design of products and their processes, including manufacture and support. This approach leads developers, from the outset, to consider all the stages of the product life cycle, from conceptual through disposal, including quality, cost, schedule and customer requirements.

Papers are sought that discuss architectures for supporting virtual teams, decision-support tools and design rationale, as well as those that concentrate on more theoretical issues such as specifications of shared languages, constraint-based problem solving and negotiation. In particular, the editors are soliciting papers dealing with various aspects of enterprise integration such as assessing an organization's readiness, re-engineering enterprise processes, CE metrics, agile manufacturing and virtual enterprise. Also, papers related to the following topics are welcome:

  • Modeling manufacturing resources, processes, and strategies to support concurrent engineering.
  • Designing performance measurement systems for improving the application of the concurrent engineering process.
  • Experience from implementing concurrent engineering systems in real life environments.
  • The role of multimedia in enterprise management and integration.
  • Decision support systems for integrating organizational decision making.
  • Improving communication and decision making within quality function deployment.

Special issue of Annals of Operations Research

The Annals of Operations Research will publish a special issue dedicated to the topic of "Non-Traditional Approaches to Statistical Classification and Regression."

Submissions from both theoretical and applied studies are encouraged for consideration for publication in this special issue. All papers submitted for consideration will go through the standard review process. Reprints will be provided to authors of accepted manuscripts. Four copies of all manuscripts should be sent when submitting a paper. The deadline for submission is July 1, 1996.

International Workshop on Game Theory and Politics

A growing interest among game theorists is the interface between game theory and political science. Almost every political action is the result of interactive decisions by corporate bodies, making strategic analysis a prime consideration.

Therefore, papers are sought for this workshop that deal with game theoretic models of and applications to any aspect of political decision making and law. Relevant topics include: bargaining and coalition formation; decision making in committees and legislative assemblies; voting and social choice; incentive considerations in the design of political institutions; game theoretic models of international affairs; and contractual interactions as games.

Papers should be sent to Professor Eyal Winter, The Economics Department, Washington University, Box 1208, Brooklin Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130-4899.

Special issue of Journal of Product Innovation Management

While considerable knowledge has been accumulated about product improvements, upgrades and line extensions, very little systematic research has focused on really or radically new products. The purpose of this issue, dealing with "Really New Products," is to encourage work on the topic and provide a forum for publishing new work in this research area. Really New Products are those which, from the customers viewpoint, are new to the marketplace, such as those products which create new categories. Papers of particular interest for this issue are those which: establish specific standards for contrasting the process of developing really new vs. incremental products; isolate key factors which cause customers or consumers to evaluate or adopt really new products in ways that may differ from incremental products; identify key success factors for really new products and indicate how they may differ from incremental products; and assess the impact of really new products on organization performance. Also, papers advancing a theory which is both testable and linked to practice are sought.

Research on methods which deal with the peculiarities of really new products are also encouraged for presentation. For example, work on how to incorporate customer input into developing really new products, how to evaluate the potential of really new products and how to forecast for really new products, is desired. Authors should have the goal of presenting innovative work that simultaneously explores themes of interest to practicing product developers while retaining academic rigor. Novel perspectives and methods are encouraged.

The deadline for submitting papers is July 1, 1996. All manuscripts are received with the understanding that they are original, unpublished works and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere. The co-editors of the special issue are Abbie Griffin of the University of Chicago, Barry Bayus of the University of North Carolina and Donald Lehman of Columbia University. For more information, contact Abbie Griffin, University of Chicago, 1101 East 58th Street, Chicago, IL 60637; E-mail: abbie.griffin@gsb.uchicago.edu; Phone: (312) 702-3657; Fax: (312) 702-0458.

    Asia-Pacific Journal of Quality Management

The Asia-Pacific Journal of Quality Management is planning a special issue on "Quality Engineering & Management at the Enterprise Level."

The Asia-Pacific region is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Western countries are interested in establishing their manufacturing and service industries in the Asia-Pacific region. This has a tremendous impact on the wealth of countries in this region and the nature of the market based on various trade liberalization policies in those countries. It ultimately leads to an open competition where the quality and the cost of goods play a significant role in maintaining the competitive position of the firms. Taking into account the role of quality management in industries of the Asia-Pacific region and their competitiveness in terms of offering quality goods and services, this special issue has been proposed with an objective to gain insights into the quality engineering and management, and future trends of the quality management issues and techniques in the industries of the Asia- Pacific region.

Papers are sought for a special issue on Quality Engineering & Management at Enterprise Level for the Asia-Pacific Journal of Quality Management. Strategic frameworks, empirical research, conceptual and analytical models, and case studies focusing on improving the management of quality in enterprises are specially encouraged. Contributed papers may deal with, but are not limited to: statistical process control, process capability studies, robust design, quality function deployment, policy deployment for quality, fault tree analysis and failure mode effect & criticality analysis (FMECA), computer-aided systems for quality assurance (QA), standards for QA, bench marking strategies for QA, human factors and training strategies for QA, technology management for QA.

Research surveys and application papers in the above areas are also welcome. Four copies of the manuscript should be mailed to one of the guest co-editors by Dec. 31, 1996.

    Guest co-editors for the special issue: Dr. A. Gunasekaran, School of Computing and Information Technology, Monash University, Churchill, Victoria 3842, Australia; Phone: +61 51 22 68 32, Fax: +61 51 22 68 42; E-mail: guna@fcit.monash.edu.au; or Prof. A.
