![]() December 1997 Rothkopf Receives Kimball Medal The George E. Kimball Award for distinguished service to the Institute and the profession of operations research and the management sciences was awarded to Michael H. Rothkopf at the Fall 1997 INFORMS Meeting in Dallas. A professor of management science and information systems at Rutgers University, Rothkopf was cited for his many volunteer efforts on behalf of ORSA, TIMS and now INFORMS, including serving as editor-in-chief of Interfaces (a position he currently holds), as associate editor of Operations Research, as vice president of publications for TIMS; and as chair of the Publications Committees of ORSA and of TIMS. A Council member of the Business Applications Section of ORSA for six years, Rothkopf was instrumental in merging with CPMS, the Practice Section of INFORMS. Since 1991, he has been a Council member of CPMS, serving as the vice president of the Northern California Chapter in 1975 and as president in 1976. Additionally, his responsibilities have included chairing the New Jersey Chapter meetings on several occasions; serving as a Council Member of ORSA from 1981-84; and serving as Vice President at Large of TIMS from 1992-94. Rothkopf has also served on the John von Neumann Prize Committee, the Frederick W. Lanchester Prize Committee and the TIMS Distinguished Service Medal Committee, and has served as a judge for the Franz Edelman Award (for which he was a finalist in 1980). Newt Garber, chair of the Kimball Medal Committee, made the presentation on behalf of committee members Peter Norden and David Schrady. In accepting the award, Rothkopf thanked a long list of people, including INFORMS for "giving me the opportunity to work on things that I thought were important." Pointing out that INFORMS was a "society of volunteers," Rothkopf said that in just the publications area, he has had the "privilege of calling upon dozens of editors and hundreds of reviewers" who played some role in his receiving the Kimball Award. The George E. Kimball Medal is named in honor of a pioneer of operations research during the World War II era.
