Computer-Assisted Management and Control of Manufacturing Systems

This book examines the important elements of modern manufacturing systems and provides techniques that are readily applicable in real situations.

The pressure of increasing competition together with the development of new technologies has forced widespread changes in manufacturing methodologies. Manufacturers have had to abandon more traditional approaches to design, operate and apply more suitable engineering and business techniques.

Model-based and knowledge-based methodologies for designing, controlling and operating modern manufacturing systems are presented in this text. Edited by Spyros G. Tzafestas, this book presents many topics including: modeling, system design via Petri nets, shop controller-manager design, real-time routing, quality management, decision support and collaborative manufacturing.

Pattern Languages of Program Design 3

Patterns remain one of the most important new technologies contributing to software engineering, system design and development. All indications are that patterns will continue to grow in significance as more and more developers rely on reusable design patterns to help them achieve quick, cost-effective delivery of applications.

This volume, edited by Robert Martin, Dirk Riehle and Frank Buschmann, is a collection of the current best practices and trends in the patterns community. The patterns contained in this book provide effective, tested and versatile software design solutions for developers in all domains, institutions and organizations.

The third in a series of books documenting patterns for professional software developers, this volume covers a wide range of pattern-related subjects, and patterns are arranged by topic so software engineers can easily select those of greatest relevance to their needs and application domains.

Introduction to Stochastic Programming

The aim of stochastic programming is to find optimal decisions in problems that involve uncertain data. This field is currently developing rapidly with contributions from many disciplines including operations research, mathematics and probability.

This textbook, authored by John R. Birge and Francois Louveaux, provides a first course in stochastic programming suitable for students with a basic knowledge of linear programming, elementary analysis and probability. The authors aim to present a broad overview of the main themes and methods of the subject. Its primary goal is to help students develop an intuition on how to model uncertainty into mathematical problems, which changes uncertainty brings into the decision process and what techniques help to manage uncertainty in solving the problems.

The first chapters introduce some worked examples of stochastic programming and demonstrate how a stochastic model is formally built. Subsequent chapters develop the properties of stochastic programs and the basic solution techniques used to solve them.

The Logic of Logistics

Fierce competition in today's global market provides powerful motivation for developing ever more sophisticated logistic systems. Authored by Julien Bramel and David Smichi-Levi, this book is written for the logistics manager and researcher interested in the science of logistics.

Additionally, it presents a survey of the modern theory and application of logistics.

Part I considers the basic performance analysis techniques — in particular, tools required to perform worst-case analysis and average-case analysis are discussed. Other topics covered in the book include: vehicle routing problems, production and inventory problems and hierarchical problems in logistics networks and in particular, the integration of different levels of decisions.

High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders

Morgan W. McCall Jr., professor of management and organization at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business, challenges conventional assumptions about leadership in "High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders."

Drawing on extensive research and business consulting work, McCall provides a comprehensive guide to how organizations can identify high-potential candidates within their own ranks, then give them experiences to develop and hone their leadership talents.

Among McCall's arguments is that executives today make a number of false assumptions about leadership skills that can hinder them from developing talent within the ranks of their companies.

McCall believes the real leaders for the future are those who have the ability to learn from their experiences and remain open to continuous learning. If these people get the right experience on the job, McCall says, they will have the ultimate opportunity to learn new executive skills.

Value Management Practice

Value management methodology is based on a few determining principles and concepts that are the framework upon which value practitioners build and add substance through the constant sharing of ideas.

This book, authored by Michel Thiry, has been inspired by the work and experiences of leading value practitioners. "Value Management Practice" outlines the scope of practice from which practitioners can learn the principles, concepts, tools and techniques to create value-added project management.

Value integration in project management can enhance an organization's communications and team spirit, increase knowledge of a project to facilitate decision making, lead to optimum overall performance with fewer resources, and generally improve projects and organizations.
