December 1998 Rockafellar, Wets Win Lanchester Prize The 1997 Lanchester Prize was awarded to R. Tyrrell Rockafellar and Roger J.-B. Wets for their book "Variational Analysis." Lanchester Prize Committee Chair Stephen Robinson made the presentation. The award citation noted that the text "presented a systematic exposition and a unified treatment of subjects that previously were available only in widely scattered sources that used incompatible terminology. "It also succeeds in pulling together these scattered results to create a unified and elegant whole, presented in a way that makes it accessible to a very broad audience. The result is a comprehensive presentation of modern methods for treating variational problems where differentiability is not present, motivated by and having numerous applications in operations research and management sciences, economics, engineering, and social sciences." "We are very grateful to get this award. We worked very hard on this project — it took us something like nine years. We started it over several times before we were satisfied with it," said Rockafellar. "I would also like to congratulate this society on the contributions it has made in being such a connection between applications and mathematical theory. "Optimization would not be what it is today if it were not for all of these inputs and demands coming from the operations research community. This has all heavily influenced our thinking and the book that resulted from it." Also on the award committee were: Paul Glasserman, Ellis Johnson, Jong-Shi Pang, Andras Prekopa, Stephen Robinson and Amir Sadrian. Honorable mentions were awarded to Joseph Abate, Gagan L. Choudhury, Kin K. Leung, David M. Lucatoni and Ward Whitt for a sequence of 15 papers on numerical techniques for transform inversion, and application of those techniques to various stochastic models. Committee members praised their work for both its originality and for opening up new domains of application.
