Subdivision, Chapter Awards



Decision Analysis Society


The Decision Analysis Society of INFORMS presented the 1998 Student Paper Competition Award to Neil A. Stiber for his paper, "A Bayesian Belief Network Expert System for Screening Contaminated Sites."

Stiber is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.

The Decision Analysis Society and INFORMS also presented the 1996 Publication Award to Gordon B. Hazen and James M. Pellissier for their paper, "Recursive Utility for Stochastic Trees."

Moving Spirit Award


This year's Moving Spirit Award was presented to Douglas A. Samuelson and Raymond L. Livingston Jr.

Samuelson was recognized for his "support of the INFORMS Washington, D.C. local chapter (WINFORMS)." In addition to serving as chair for the annual symposium, he also "initiated the continuing education program, held several offices, restored the chapter's financial stability and significantly increased chapter membership."

Livingston was acknowledged for his pivotal role in the first national MAS society meeting conducted in Huntsville, Ala., in May.

As the MAS Chief of Staff, Livingston "efficiently and effectively marshaled the RAHMORS chapter resources (corporate resources in Huntsville) and Huntsville volunteers to fully support the program and administrative requirements of the conference and conference attendees."

Livingston was commended for his "personal leadership, focused energy and professional dedication," all of which contributed to the success of the first national MAS society meeting.

College on OrganizatIon Dissertation Competition


The College of Organization Science presented its Organization Dissertation Award to Lyda Biggelow of the University of California, Berkeley, for her paper, "Evolution of the Boundaries of the Firm: An Empirical Analysis of the U.S. Automobile Industry, 1917-1942."

Second-place recipients were: Shawn Marie Lofstrom of the University of Minnesota and Andreas Schwab of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Honorable mentions included: Michael Lenox of MIT; Joseph Paul Broschak of the University of Texas, Austin; Mary Zellmer-Bruhn of the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Charles Dhanaraj of the University of Western Ontario; and Marvin Washington of Northwestern.

Transportation Science Section


The Transportation Science Section of INFORMS presented the First Place 1998 Dissertation Prize to Gianpaolo Ghiani of the Universita degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II" for "Arc Routing, Allocation-Arc Routing and Location Arc Routing Problems."

Robert L. Hoffman of the University of Maryland at College Park received an honorable mention for his paper, "Integer Programming Models for Ground-Holding In Air Traffic Flow Management."

Manufacturing & Service Operations Management Section


The Manufacturing & Service Operations Management Section presented the first-place student paper award to Xiaomei Ding of the University of British Columbia for the paper, "The Bayesian Newsvendor with Unobservable Sales." Ding received $400 and an honorarium certificate.

Second-place honors went to Jeremie Gallien of MIT for his paper, "Optimization of a Component Procurement Policy in a Stochastic Assembly System."

Honorable Mentions went to Carlos Bispo of Carnegie Mellon University for the paper, "Managing Simple Rentrant Flow Lines: Theoretical Foundation and Experimental Results" and John Hollywood of MIT for his paper, "An Analytic Model for Request Based Job Shops."
