Special Section on Enterprise Resource Planning

The Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS) invites researchers to submit papers for a special section on enterprise resource planning. ERP is a generic term for an integrated enterprise computing system that offers an overall view of the business and multi-dimensional information, integrating business and supporting managerial decision-making.

The manuscripts' primary focus will be on understanding organizational issues associated with initiating, implementing and institutionalizing an ERP from both a business/IS practitioner and academic research standpoint. Research is needed to understand ERP systems better and to find answers to questions concerning the impact of ERP.

Five copies of the double-spaced manuscript, with abstract and authors' biographies, are required. Submit manuscripts to: Arik A. Ragowsky or Toni M. Somers, Department of Information Systems and Manufacturing, School of Business Administration, Wayne State University, 100 Rands House, Detroit, MI 48202; phone: 313-577-7838 or 313-577-9144; fax: 313-577-4880; E-mail: Aragowsky@aol.com or a.somers@wayne.edu

For more information, send e-mail to: claio@quitel.cs.buap.mx

Special Issue on Simulation Studies in Operations Management

The Journal of Operations Management is planning a special issue on "Simulation Studies in Operations Management." The special issue, edited by Scott Shafer and Timothy Smunt of Wake Forest University, seeks to publish high-quality papers that employ computer simulation to address and resolve real operations management issues.

The special issue editors are particularly interested in papers that are based upon empirical situations or data. Highest priority will be given to those studies that indicate the research problem under investigation has basis in the real world. Contributors are welcome to contact either special issue editor to discuss the suitability of their potential submissions. Manuscripts must be submitted no later than Jan. 14, 2000 to one of the special issue editors.

For more information, refer to the JOM Special Issue page found at http://www.mba.wfu.edu/faculty/smunt/ or contact one of the special issue editors at scott.shafer@mba.wfu.edu or tim.smunt@mba.wfu.edu.

Special Issue on Scheduling Theory and Applications

The Production Planning and Control: An International Journal plans to publish a special issue on the subject of "Scheduling Theory and Applications." This special issue will focus on both the development of scheduling theory and the use of various tools and techniques to solve scheduling problems faced by the practitioner. Hopefully, the reader will be able to develop a better appreciation of these tools and techniques, their use in problem solving, and their relationship to methods and emerging philosophies in our discipline.

This special issue will provide the advantage of grouping together high-quality papers in the area of scheduling theory and applications. The term scheduling is adapted in its most generic sense and includes the service as well as manufacturing environments.

Authors should follow the Instructions to Authors for the Production Planning and Control: An International Journal (available from the editor) when preparing their manuscripts and should submit four copies by Dec. 31, 1999 to the guest editor: Dr. Jatinder N.D. Gupta, Department of Management, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306; phone: (765) 285-5301; E-mail: jgupta@bsu.edu

9th Congress of APDIO

IO'2000 — the 9th Congress of APDIO (Portuguese Operations Research Society) — will be held on the campus of the Setúbal Polytechnic Institute, April 16-19, 2000. The scientific program will consist of plenary sessions by invited prominent OR scientists, theme sessions organized by their proponents, parallel sessions with communications grouped by the Program Committee, and poster sessions (especially devoted to provide a more open discussion of ideas and offer a better dissemination of the results of specific R&D projects).

Authors must send to the Program Committee (preferably by e-mail: io2000prog@inescc.pt) an abstract by Jan. 31, 2000. The abstract must include the title of the communication or poster, the identification of authors (name, affiliation and e-mail) and three key words.

Further information is available at IO'2000's Web site: http://www.est.ips.pt/io2000.

Wagner Prize Applications Due
Applications for the Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice—2000 Competition are due March 1, 2000.

The competition is sponsored by CPMS, the Practice Section of INFORMS, in memory of the late Daniel H. Wagner. Metron, Inc., Daniel H. Wagner, Associates, Inc., and Applied Mathematics, Inc. support the prize through endowment commitments. The competition is held each year at the INFORMS Fall National Meeting.

Applicants must submit:
  1. A two-page abstract in English that provides evidence of mathematical development, solution, unique new algorithm, or series of coherent advances developed in conjunction with an application;

  2. Written verification of success in practice;

  3. Written permission by the authors for publication of a previously unpublished, English-language paper in a professional journal (i.e., Interfaces) and for assignment of copyright;

  4. Written commitment if selected as a finalist, to make a high-quality, 30-minute presentation for CPMS at the Fall National INFORMS meeting.

The award will consist of a cash amount from endowments, to be determined each year by the board of CPMS, and citation plaque giving the authors' names and a summary or title of the work.

The screening committee will select semifinalists on the basis of the abstracts and verification of success in practice. By April 1, 2000, semifinalists will be invited to submit formal papers, due June 1, 2000. The judging committee will select finalists, provide written comments by the committee, and invite them to submit final papers, due Sept. 1, 2000. The public presentations of the final entries for each prize will be scheduled as appropriate at the Fall National INFORMS Meeting. Announcements will be made and award ceremonies will be held at the same meeting, after the public presentations. Judging of the final papers and selection of the winning entry will be on the basis of:
  • Quality and coherence of analysis and originality of mathematical solutions;

  • Quality and clarity of writing;

  • Utility or success of the work in one or more real world practice applications; and

  • Satisfactory oral presentation in public, at the scheduled place and time.

The abstract must describe what the applicant has accomplished, in enough detail for the judges to determine the appropriateness of the work for the competition. One page should describe the application and one page should outline the unique methodology, algorithm or analytical techniques. Entrants may use fax or attach Word 97/Office98 document to e-mail to make the deadline, but must mail hard copy as well. The prize committee particularly encourages applicants that can demonstrate excellence in practice with verifiable results, but the quantitative impact of which is smaller than those normally associated with the Franz Edelman Award for Management Science Achievement. Finalists' papers will be published in future issues of Interfaces.

Submit questions and abstracts to: Joseph H. Discenza, Daniel H. Wagner Associates, Inc., 2 Eaton Street, Suite 500, Hampton, VA 23669; E-mail: joe@va.wagner.com; URL: http://www.informs.org/Prizes/WagnerPrize.html
