Call For Papers

MAS: Beyond Point Estimates

Dr. Alfred Brandstein, Chief Scientist, USMC and the general chair of the 4th Annual International Meeting of the Military Applications Society of INFORMS, seeks abstracts for the upcoming meeting to be held at the Marine Corps Research Center, Quantico, Va., on May 21-23.

The theme for this year's conference is "Beyond Point Estimates." Nontraditional and innovative methods for modeling, synthesizing results from multiple sources, testing the robustness of solutions, recommending a decision in a changing environment and exploring the space of possibilities, as well as all other operations research methods, tools, studies, etc. of a military nature, are welcomed.

Submit your abstract (not to exceed 250 words) in Microsoft Word format as an E-mail attachment to either of the Program co-chairs at leonardiml@mccdc.usmc.mil or hornege@mccdc.usmc.mil. The deadline for submitting abstracts is March 30.

The Internet, E-Commerce and Innovation

Innovation is increasingly acknowledged as essential for value creation in modern business. But is the nature and process of innovation significantly changing as the space where the Internet and E-Commerce play important roles grows in modern economy? Specifically, with the advent of the Internet and E-Commerce in large segments of business, does the transformed nature of time and space and the obvious need for exploiting speed and feedback, among other things, call for new ways to conceptualize, analyze and implement what can be termed digital-based innovation?

IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management seeks to explore the redefining of innovation management theory and practice as it relates to a vast range of businesses, industries or technologies associated with the emerging E-Business age. Papers that are conceptual or empirical, descriptive or prescriptive, and case-study-based or industry-wide-based are welcome.

Due to the rapid and continuing change enabled by the Internet and E-Commerce in practice and theory, it is recognized that the research field is still taking shape. Consequently, theory grounded on case studies is encouraged and prescriptive models (although desired) are not demanded. Sample topics include:
  • E-Commerce innovation strategy in specific firms,

  • E-Commerce innovation strategy in specific industries,

  • The process of innovation in E-Commerce,

  • How E-Commerce is changing the nature of innovation in services,

  • The changing nature of innovation in the digital age,

  • E-Commerce and innovation in the supply chain,

  • Open source and innovation.
Send five copies of original manuscripts to one of the co-editors, by Sept. 1: Mel Horwitch, Institute for Technology and Enterprise, Suite 13B, 55 Broad Street New York, NY 10005; E-mail: Horwitch@poly.edu; or Jonathan D. Linton, Department of Management, Polytechnic University, 421C Dibner, Six Metrotech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201; E-mail: Jlinton@poly.edu.

Decision-Making Support Systems

Decision-Making Support Systems (DMSS), such as stand-alone DSS, EIS, ES/KBS or combined systems, are specialized Information Systems designed to support some, or all, phases of the decision-making process while enhancing this process. Despite the potential benefits from deploying such systems, the inherent complexity of the implementation process in organizations has hindered their extensive utilization in practice.

For this reason, we invite colleagues who are doing research in this field, to collaborate with this editorial effort to diffuse the knowledge about DMSS through the submission of quality manuscripts for the book, "Decision-Making Support Systems: Achievements and Challenges for the Next Decade."

Topics can involve but are not limited to any of the following: decision-making concepts in organizations; DMSS types; DMSS integration strategies; ESS, IDSS, MSS and DTS architectures; healthcare, accounting and financial, transportation, military and environmental applications; data warehousing and data mining; intelligent agents; neural networks, genetic algorithms, system simulation; DMSS system design and development methodologies; measuring DMSS effectiveness; organizational and management issues and impacts; implementation barriers and future trends. March 1 is the deadline for topic proposals, while June 15 is the deadline for full-chapter submissions. Send 250-word abstracts to Manuel Mora: mmora@netscape.net, with copy to forgionn@umbc.edu and jgupta@bsu.edu.

AIRO 2001 Annual Conference

Researchers and OR practitioners wishing to present papers at AIRO 2001, the annual conference of the Operational Research Society of Italy, should send an abstract of maximum 300 words by May 5.

The file should be sent to: airo2001@cinque.unica.it, or to the following address: AIRO 2001 — Prof. Paola Zuddas, Dipartimento di Ingegneria del Territorio Sezione Idraulica, Università degli Studi di Cagliari Piazza D'Armi, I-09123 Cagliari, Italy.

A special issue of Ricerca Operativa, the AIRO journal, will be devoted to papers presented at the conference. Authors interested in this opportunity have to submit the full paper by Oct. 30.
