Ragsdale recently received a grant for $200,000 from Dominion Energy, Inc. in Glen Allen, Va., to found and direct The Dominion Center for Energy Modeling and Optimization at Virginia Tech. The Dominion Center's mission is to conduct research on business techniques, technologies and strategies to address current and emerging challenges in the deregulated energy marketplace. Arnie Barnett, a professor at MIT, fulfilled one of his long-term goals on Election Day when he rode in the jumpseat of US Airways Flight 1502 from Dallas to Pittsburgh. He found the view in and outside the cockpit stunning, and was amazed at how quickly the two-hour flight whisked by. (Unlike the election itself, his flight ended on time.) The next day, he flew in the jumpseat of US Airways Flight 2004 from Pittsburgh to Providence. Anna Nagurney, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, has been nominated for the Fulbright/University of Innsbruck distinguished faculty chair for academic year 2001-02. Nagurney is the John F. Smith Memorial Professor at the Isenberg School of Management. She is an internationally known scholar whose work includes constructing computer models of large-scale financial, transportation and economic systems. Nagurney received one of the 34 Fulbright distinguished faculty chairs awarded this fall. She will travel to Austria and will teach from March 2002 until June 2002. Nagurney has also received three grants from the National Science Foundation to conduct research on how travelers and consumers make decisions involving telecommuting and teleshopping. Professor Robert W. Grubbström, Linköping Institute of Technology, Sweden, has received the Award of Recognition from the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Grubbström was recognized for "his outstanding contribution to the development of the Faculty."
