Cincinnati Meeting and P&G: Breaking the Mold

By David F. Rogers, General Chair, Cincinnati INFORMS

When another INFORMS conference is scheduled, we hear of new initiatives, exciting sessions, new policies and unique social environments. Often, we find algorithms and a frenzied hotel reception. The Cincinnati INFORMS committee has worked hard to break the mold by retaining the positive attributes of a basic conference, modifying the event for changing constituencies, and adding unique research, educational and social programs.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has pledged support of $125,000 to polish Cincinnati INFORMS (May 2-5); as a result, several new initiatives and enhancements will shine. "Delivering to the Global Consumer" is the theme. Conference "firsts" are abundant.

In order to provide more flexibility for submissions, Cincinnati is the first INFORMS conference to eliminate the printing of the Preliminary Program. Abstracts of sponsored, invited and contributed papers received before Jan. 10 will appear on the initial INFORMS Online Preliminary Program. Papers received between Jan. 11 and March 15 will be appended weekly to IOL and will appear in the Final Program. Papers received after March 15 will be appended weekly to IOL and will appear in the Addendum to the Final Program.

The First INFORMS Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium will feature 2 1/2 days of sessions and workshops. Innovative instructors from INFORMS disciplines will provide live demonstrations. See http://www.sba.muohio.edu/cochrajj/1999TEC.htm for details.

Pedagogical sessions planned for Monday-Wednesday provide a critical mass of quality programming. The First INFORMS Student Colloquium for Industrial Placement (May 1) is intended to assist grad students in finding a career and flourishing in it. Contact: Ram.Ganeshan@UC.edu.

The First Conference on Information Systems and Technology Plenary features Todd Garrett, CIO of P&G. The First MAS Plenary will be delivered by Gen. George T. Babbitt, Air Force Military Command. A full slate of military applications is scheduled. The Omega Rho Distinguished Lecturer is Ronald Howard of Stanford University. Look for a special Sunday evening speaker of international fame! Another first: tutorial hours exclusively for several heterogeneous tutorials.

The Monday reception will be held at the Cincinnati Museum Center, home to an Omnimax, the Museum of Natural History and the Cincinnati Historical Museum. We have access to all. Kudos to Procter & Gamble for their support in making Cincinnati memorable!

Attendees can register on Tuesday for the first INFORMS Baseball Outing to see the Cincinnati Reds play at nearby Riverfront Stadium.

Cincinnati is renown for its restaurants. The longest-running five-star restaurant in all of North America is within walking distance of the meeting hotels, and a great number of diverse ethnic and mainstream restaurants await nearby. The Cincinnati Art Museum, the new Arts District and Tower Place Mall are some of the dozens of attractions. Also, the Saul I. Gass 10K Run, sponsored by P&G's Sunny Delight, returns.
