![]() April 2000 OR Around the World International issue represents a successful collaboration between INFORMS and IFORSBy Andres Weintraub IFORS, the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, is pleased to contribute to the third special issue of OR/MS Today devoted to international perspectives on OR. These special issues are the result of a continuing collaboration between INFORMS and IFORS. The first of the three issues was initiated by Peter Bell, the IFORS president at that time, and his Administrative Committee. Using the network of worldwide contacts of IFORS with its 45-member national societies, they brought new international material to OR/MS Today. The expanded international coverage was intended to be of interest to readers from different parts of the world in addition to the predominant North American readership of INFORMS. The first international issue, dedicated to articles on OR as practiced in different parts of the world, was an award-winning success. Recently a new agreement was established between INFORMS and IFORS whereby IFORS would contribute contacts to make an international issue on an annual basis. The first issue of the new agreement came out in April 1999, and contained articles from Chile on copper mining, Japan on its financial sector, South Africa on game ranch management, the Philippines on logistics, and Canada on forest fire management and traffic models. It also carried a discussion on whether OR is global or local. The current issue again boasts articles representing different countries and continents, as well as areas of applications. We hope that by collaborating in bringing to the readers of OR/MS Today this variety of international articles we can contribute to one of the main aims of IFORS, which is promoting the development of OR worldwide and the exchange of information on its developments. On a final note, I would like to express my appreciation and admiration for the work of Peter Horner, editor of OR/MS Today, for the way he has been able to interact with authors and develop the articles. At IFORS, we hope that this collaboration will continue well into the future. Andres Weintraub is the president of IFORS.
