New Conference to Focus on
Enterprise Solutions

INFORMS will launch its new applications conference on May 20-22 with a program rich in best practices and professional development. Held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla in San Diego, "Optimizing the Extended Enterprise in the New Economy" will focus on analytic solutions across the enterprise — from supply-chain integration to e-commerce, customer service, revenue management and more.

The 60 speakers on the program represent more than 35 leading companies, as well as top business and engineering schools. The complete program, with abstracts and speaker information, is online at www.informs.org/Conf/Practice2001. To ensure an optimal environment for learning and networking, space is limited, and interested professionals are encouraged to register right away. The early registration deadline is April 27.

The entire education program, and in particular the intensive schedule of professional development tutorials, is designed for professionals at several levels: analysts who apply quantitative methods in their work, managers who select and lead technical staff, and executives who need to understand how and when analytic methods are useful.

Peter Cochrane, former chief technologist at British Telecommunications (BT) and co-founder of ConceptLabs, will headline the program with a multi-media look at the increasing acceleration toward Moore's Wall, the disruption on the way and what we might find on the other side. Cochrane's 38-year career at BT included 10 years as head of research with personal research contributions in artificial intelligence, telemedicine, human interfaces, network design and others.

James Q. Crowe, president and CEO of Level 3 Communications, and Thomas M. Cook, known for his work in revenue management at American Airlines and Sabre, will deliver other plenary sessions. A panel of leading practitioners, moderated by MIT Dean of Engineering Thomas L. Magnanti, will explore the role of the quantitative/analytic professional in the New Economy. Panelists will draw on their experiences and perspectives from the computer, software, telecommunications, transportation and digital marketplace industries.

Five tracks incorporating 54 sessions will allow conference attendees to customize a schedule that meets their needs. Track 1 explores how quantitative techniques are being applied across the enterprise in companies such as SAP, United Parcel Service and IBM. Track 2 looks at e-CRM, e-procurement, real-time supply chain, click stream analysis and other cutting-edge business models. Track 3 highlights best practices across a range of industries. Tracks 4 and 5 offer an intensive program of professional development tutorials in OR/MS methodology and software solutions.

The 2001 Franz Edelman Competition, sponsored by the College on the Practice of Management Sciences, will be held at the conference. Six organizations will compete for honors as the most outstanding example of operations research work in practice: Merrill Lynch, Samsung Electronics and Leachman & Associates, General Motors, GE Corporate Research and Development Center and NBC, United States Army Recruiting Command, and a team made up of Universidade de Sao Paul, Interativa and Wagemaker Consultoria. Criteria for the $10,000 first prize emphasize projects with verifiable results that had major impacts on their client organizations. CPMS will also sponsor a reprise of the 2000 winning Wagner Prize presentation for excellence in implemented OR work.

The INFORMS Roundtable will sponsor several best practices sessions that provide an inside, high-level look at the latest applications. Topics include OR in the e-business era, the ideal OR/MS hire, and the evolution of e-commerce and OR in the airline industry.

The conference is designed as a business forum with structured opportunities for networking built into the program. Speakers and INFORMS leaders will facilitate roundtable discussions. "Birds-of-a-feather" groups will focus on topics such as buying and selling OR, data management, e-commerce applications, real-time OR and others. In addition, attendees can explore product solutions in a business marketplace where the emphasis is on informal, relaxed interaction. Software vendors, technology solution providers, publishers and other companies will be there to provide advice and information.

The conference hotel, the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, is located just minutes from downtown La Jolla, ocean beaches, 20 golf courses and all the attractions of the San Diego area.
