Special Issue of Interfaces

The journal Interfaces seeks papers for a special issue on AIDS. The issue will focus on application of OR/MS techniques for decision making on AIDS. This includes, but is not limited to, such diverse areas as policy analysis of preventive interventions (for example, screening and counseling programs, educational programs, condom availability programs, needle exchange and bleach programs, and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs), analysis of therapies and vaccines, models for allocation of HIV/AIDS resources, and models for individual decision making by HIV-infected individuals.

Implementation in this context will be construed broadly. Although the results of the analysis need not have been implemented directly in an organization, the common theme is that the work aims to promote better decision making regarding HIV/AIDS. Thus, for example, a paper describing a purely theoretical epidemic model would not fit within the aims of the special issue, whereas a paper describing an epidemic model that uses actual data, that addresses an HIV/AIDS policy question, and that has been communicated to those concerned with policies would fit within the aims of the special issue.

All papers submitted for consideration will be refereed within four months of receipt. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 1, 1996.

EURO/INFORMS Joint International Meeting

The 1997 joint international meeting between EURO and INFORMS will be held in Barcelona, July 14-17, 1997. Preliminary invited sessions are being arranged. We welcome further suggestions for topics of invited sessions. These proposals should contain the title of the session, a list of five speakers and titles of their papers, together with abstracts completed according to the general instructions. Suggestions for panel discussions are also welcome, especially those that relate to the theme of the meeting, e.g., OR/MS Education in the 21st Century. We will endeavour to provide facilities for groups to work together on topics of interest, and to include these in the program. If you are willing to organize one of these, please contact the Conference Secretariat by Nov. 30, 1996.

Special presentations are being solicited from prominent researchers. Also, tutorials on current OR/MS advances are being arranged; we welcome suggestions for tutorial topics and tutorial speakers.

Authors wishing to contribute papers are requested to submit an abstract of no more than 100 words not later than November 30, 1996. A paper will only be considered if a fee of $75 is included with the abstract.

Abstracts of all papers to be presented at the conference will be published in advance of the conference. Issues of the European Journal of Operational Research, the International Transactions in Operations Research, and the Journal of the Spanish OR Society will be reserved for publication of the most relevant papers presented at the conference. Authors are encouraged to prepare full papers for submission to these journals. All submitted papers will be refereed. Submission details and deadlines will be included in the Invitation Program.

Special Issue of Transportation Science

Maritime transportation is vitally important for global international trade and the development of world economies. It is also a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of transport. Technological innovation in areas such as satellite communication, electronic data interchange, and global positioning systems, as well as institutional changes such as increased deregulation worldwide pose new challenges for maritime transportation, on both a regional and global basis.

Transportation Science plans to have a focused issue on maritime transportation, and is seeking papers in this area for publication. High quality scientific contributions are sought on the following topics (list is not all inclusive):

maritime transportation networks and logistics
ports and the land-sea intermodal interface
fleet operations and management
shipping economics and competitiveness
ship investment and portfolio analysis
vessel traffic management

Transition '97

Transition '97: Transition to Advanced Market Institutions and Economies: Systems and Operations Research Challenges -- an international conference to be held June 18-21, 1997, in Warsaw, Poland, is seeking papers dealing with the strategic choices, obstacles to and alternatives involved in modeling such transition. Subject areas include macroeconomic modeling, restructuring, public and social sectors, international stability, microeconomic modeling and analysis, sectoral issues and models, institutional framework.

All of the aforementioned subject areas should be presented from the point of view of decision making analysis and support methods, optimization, modeling theory and techniques, systems analysis and operations research. Software intended to assist in the solving of real-life problems is also welcome for presentation.

Short versions (4 pages) of proposed papers are due by Aug. 31, 1996.

Operations and Quantitative Management Conference

Software Quality Engineering

Papers are sought for the First International Conference on Software Quality Engineering (SQE 97), May 5-7, 1997, in Udine, Italy -- the first in a planned series designed to bring together scientists, engineers, academic professionals and industrialists interested in software engineering quality and education.

Topics include software quality engineering issues such as design, methodologies, CASE technology, testing and validation, software maintenance, application experience and risk assessment; educational issues such as philosophy of computer-based learning course design, choice of support software, teaching techniques and development, and industrial collaboration; and software engineering issues such as innovative teaching schemes, human computer interfaces, natural language understanding and processing, laboratory data visualization, specialist teaching programs, and pattern and speech recognition.

Special Issue of Omega

A special issue of Omega is planned which will be devoted to the role and effectiveness of management science in the Asia-Pacific countries. This special issue will focus on methods of performance evaluation, including data envelopment analysis (DEA) and its variants. Papers which combine the methods of evaluation employed in an intrinsically interesting field would be particularly welcomed. Examples of such papers might include a combined use of the analytic hierarchy process and DEA to evaluate textile manufacturing performances in China, or a combined use of DEA and stochastic frontier regressions to evaluate the performances of water districts in Japan.

Papers must be submitted by Dec. 31, 1996, and should be prepared according to Omega guidelines as illustrated in "Instructions to Authors" in each issue of the journal.
