INFORMS News:
Michael Florian Receives Robert Herman Award

The Transportation Science Section of INFORMS awarded the Robert Herman Lifetime Achievement Award to Michael Florian of the Center for Research in Transportation at the University of Montreal.

Florian, a leader in the field of Transportation Science, has distinguished himself as a scholar, a research manager and a role model in the scientific community. As a scholar, he was among the early contributors to the rigorous modeling, analysis and computation of traffic network equilibria, and was instrumental in establishing connections with other related areas of application such as regional science through his work on spatial price equilibria.

Through his leadership at the Center for Research in Transportation at the University of Montreal, he enhanced the education of researchers and practitioners internationally. As a founding member of a transportation company he continues to apply rigorous methodologies for transportation analysis in practice in the global arena.

He has also served the transportation science research community through his editorial work and involvement with scientific committees. He has always been willing to discuss research with younger scholars and to push the research in transportation science forward and in new directions.

The prize committee consisted of Hani Mahmassani (chair) of the University of Texas at Austin, Mark S. Daskin of Northwestern University, Anna Nagurney of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and Mark Turnquist of Cornell University.
