Special Issue: Production and Operations Management Journal Services represent the largest and the fastest-growing sector of the economies of the United States and other developed countries. With advances in information technology and the recent emergence of electronic commerce, the information-intensive services are turning out to be the most dynamic and high-potential segments of the service sector. Examples of information-intensive services include financial services, information and data services, the software industry, a variety of professional services, telecommunications, and entertainment industries including film, TV and music. For these services, the problems related to managing information are certainly important, and yet the issues surrounding the operations management function present a particularly interesting and important research challenge. This special issue of Production and Operations Management Journal will strive to meet this challenge by focusing on "managing operations in information intensive services." A broad definition of operations management function and its interfaces with other functional areas, including information systems and marketing, has been adopted to invite research papers on various topical areas. A range of research methodologies including economic and optimization models, empirical and field studies, and case studies, are welcome. Conceptual studies that improve the theoretical understanding of issues and managerial challenges facing these industries are also encouraged. Papers submitted for this special issue should address and bridge both the theory and practice of managing operations, and should be consistent with the editorial objectives of Production and Operations Management Journal. The submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2000. Guest editor for the special issue will be Uday Apte, Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX 75275-0333. E-mail: uapte@mail.cox.smu.edu. Please send five copies of your single-sided, double-spaced manuscript to the editor, Kalyan Singhal, Dept. of Management, University of Baltimore, 1420 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201. Sixth International Conference on Advanced Computer Systems The ACS '99 Conference will take place in Szczecin, Poland, Nov. 18-19, 1999. This year's conference aims to bring scientists from Eastern Europe and the West together, especially scientists in computer science working in different application areas. The workshop will focus on a wide range of applications of computer systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: data visualization, modeling and simulation, telecommunications and networking, control and decision-making, logic design, computer integrated manufacturing, computer systems security, and logic design. Authors are invited to submit papers describing original work in one of these areas. ACS '99 will entertain papers, panel sessions and proposals of tools in the areas of basic and applied research and field experiences. Contributions that describe the latest development and results of investigations are solicited in any of the areas of suggested topics. Papers must be submitted by Sept. 15, 1999. The abstract should not exceed 200 words (not more than two pages), including figures and text (typed with single spacing and Times New Roman 12 point font, one column of A4 paper, with margins equal to 2.5 cm). A cover page must include title and information about all authors (names, complete mailing addresses, e-mail, fax number). Abstract should be sent to the correct section (each section has its own e-mail address). Contact Dr. Eng. J.
