Editor-in-Chief Sought for Operations Research

Patrick Harker, the current editor of Operations Research, has indicated his intention to step down at the end of 1999. A search committee is now soliciting nominations for the next editor. Editors for the journal serve for a three-year period. The next appointment begins in January, 2000.

The editor of Operations Research will be responsible for setting the strategic editorial policies of this flagship journal for the opening years of the new millennium. This can be done by announcing the strategic directions of the journal to INFORMS membership and by selection of area editors and associate editors that support the editor's vision. The editor also has important managerial responsibilities, including the management of the manuscript review process, the timely publication of the journal and control over a budget. He/she should be capable of effectively interacting with the editorial review board, ad hoc reviewers, authors and the publisher. In addition, the editor will be expected to look for ways to continue to maintain and improve the quality of the journal and the value that it delivers to readers. Finally, the editor will also be an active player in enhancing the journal's electronic publishing activities.

Applicants are asked to provide six copies of a complete curriculum vitae; a short (1- to 2-page) statement of their proposed editorial philosophy for the journal; and an indication of the level and nature of the support that the applicant's school will provide for the editorship.

Applications should be mailed or e-mailed by Aug. 31, 1999 to: Prof. Richard C. Larson (rclarson@mit.edu), Chair, Operations Research Editor Search Committee, MIT, Center for Advanced Educational Services, 9-215, Cambridge, MA 02139. Other members of the search committee are: Morris Cohen (cohen@wharton.upenn.edu), George Nemhauser (george.nemhauser@isye.gatech.edu) and Ramesh Sharda (sharda@okstate.edu).
