OR/MS Today - August 2002 INFORMS Online New Customer Services By Matthew Saltzman The INFORMS staff and volunteers provide two main types of services to the members. There are services designed to facilitate members' performance of their professional duties the reason the organization exists at all. These services include publishing research papers in our journals, distributing those journals to members and institutions, organizing and running conferences, and disseminating news and information about the profession. There are also services designed to facilitate the business of membership. These services include new-member signup, dues and subscription renewals, and updates to member information. This month, I will describe some new and upcoming services of both types. International Abstracts in Operations Research If you haven't visited INFORMS Pubs Online (http://pubsonline.informs.org) recently, I recommend trying it out again. When you arrive at the page, follow the "Online Subscriber Login" link. On the login page, enter your last name, member number and password (the default if you haven't changed it is your member number). Even if you do not have any electronic subscriptions, there are still useful links available exclusively to logged-in members. The most important of these, new this year, is the link to the International Abstracts in Operations Research (IAOR). IAOR is published by Palgrave in conjunction with IFORS (the International Federation of Operational Research Societies). Access to IAOR Online is now included with member dues. Following the IAOR link from the Pubs Online page opens a new window or tab containing the IAOR home page. No additional authentication is required in order to follow the "Search" and "Browse Current" links under "Content." The "Browse Current" link takes you to a series of pages containing titles, journals and authors of abstracts in the current issue. You can change the display to include abstracts as well. You can browse sequentially through these pages or go directly to a page. The current issue as I write this contains 589 entries on 59 pages. The "Search" page allows you to search the current issue or the entire IAOR database using keywords in the title and abstract, a keyword category, journal information and author information. From either the current issue or the search results page, you can check off selected titles. The "View Checked Articles" button then displays the selected articles in a compact format suitable for printing. All users of Pubs Online see convenience links on the left-hand navigation bar to OR/MS Tomorrow, the INFORMS online student newsletter, and the online journal INFORMS Transactions on Education. Once you are logged into the Pubs Online page as a subscriber/member, convenience links also appear for publicly accessible pages for OR/MS Today and the Annual Comprehensive Index. Profile Updates If you are a member and receive the INFORMS E-Newsletter, you are aware that we have recently launched our new Online Member Profile Update service. This service allows members to update information in their membership database records online, rather than by mail, phone or e-mail. This service provides more timely and reliable updates than the old system, and it reduces the chance of typographical errors in member records because the data is copied to the database exactly as the member enters it. To take advantage of this service, visit http://update.informs.org. You will find a page of instructions and a link to the Profile Update login page. On the login page, you will need to enter your INFORMS member number as your user ID and password. On the next page, you can correct your basic information, including name, work and home addresses and phone numbers, e-mail address, education level and your password. On following pages, you can update information about your interest areas and subdivision memberships. You can also specify how INFORMS can use your personal information, including whether you are listed in the INFORMS Online directory or the printed directory, whether your name can be provided to other vendors of products that might be of interest to INFORMS members, and whether you receive the INFORMS E-Newsletter. The final page lists your membership status and subscription information. The information on this page cannot be updated online at this time. Updates are reviewed by INFORMS office staff and entered into the INFORMS membership database. I recommend to every member that you try the service out and validate your entry. Also, I recommend changing your password from the default to something else. Finally, note that the authentication at Pubs Online is currently distinct from the Profile Update authentication. I also recommend changing your Pubs Online password. Log in as described above and follow the "Change Info" link on the navigation bar at the top of the page. Renewal/Subscription Updates Planned for this fall, in time for the annual membership renewal cycle, is online dues and subscription payment for renewing members. When this service is ready, members will be able to log into the renewal page and see their current profile, including membership status, subscriptions and subdivision memberships. They will be able to modify their profiles and have the payment due calculation updated, and they will be able to submit payments online via credit card, through a secure e-commerce server. More details on this and other new services will be forthcoming as they are available.
