Winnebago Industries Reports First Quarter Results

Winnebago Industries Inc. (Forest City, Iowa; www.winnebagoind.com) reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2002. Revenues were $179.1 million for the 14-week quarter, an increase of 9.1 percent over revenues for the 13-week first quarter of FY 2001. Net income for the first quarter of FY 2002 was $10.7 million, an increase of 25 percent compared to first quarter last year.
The company will increase production "as a result of a substantial increase in wholesale orders and retail sales of motor homes," says company CEO Bruce Hertzke. Winnebago now holds 19 percent of the U.S. market, an increase of 12 percent from last year.
Hertzke believes the company's success is due to the introduction of successful new products. Over 65 percent of the company's products are new for 2002, including four new product lines: the Winnebago Vista and Itasca Sunstar Class C motor homes and the Winnebago Sightseer and Itasca Sunova Class A motor homes.
"We also see this increase in sales activity as a positive sign of improvement in the condition of the RV industry and the economy in general," Hertzke says. "In previous economic downturns, RV sales have been viewed as a barometer for the economy, showing signs of improvement before other areas of the economy."
