Oracle takes 8i redefining role of traditional application servers

Oracle Corp. (www.oracle.com), has announced the immediate availability of Oracle Internet Application Server 8i (Oracle iAS), a major assault on the applications server market, which analysts expect to boom to more than $11 billion by 2004.
An entirely Java-based, next generation application server, Oracle iAS incorporates into one seamless, integrated product a wide range of middleware functionality previously available only from multiple products from multiple vendors. It accelerates Web applications with dynamic caching, contains integrated reporting and querying, and offers a single console for managing an entire web site.
The Wireless Edition of Oracle iAS, includes Oracle Portal-to-Go, which enables users to access web and database content from any data enabled wireless devices.
Oracle iAS completes the Oracle Internet Platform, which consists of the Oracle8i (database and its options, Oracle iAS and the Oracle Internet Developer Suite.
Oracle8i Cache , a key feature of the new application server, stores and serves up the most-frequently accessed data in the middle-tier. Thus, users receive accurate information more quickly, while freeing up the database for more intensive activities.
Oracle has standardized on Apache for its Web server capabilities. According to IDC, the Application Server market is expected to grow from $994 million today to $11 billion by 2004.
Middle tier services offered by Oracle iAS include portal services, data caching, business intelligenceservices, and component, form and integration services.
To manage data and applications running on the Internet Platform, Oracle offers single management console, OracleEnterprise Manager. The server offers a consistent open Java solution that is able to run on a scaleable range of systems, from low-end Linux, to Windows 2000, to high-end UNIX boxes.
Both Oracle Internet Application Server 8i Standard Edition and Oracle Internet Application Server 8i Enterprise Edition are priced at $5 per universal power unit and $30 per power unit respectively. The new Wireless Edition of Oracle iAS is also available immediately, priced at $150 per universal power unit and $95 per named user.
