Mitsubishi Releases First 3D Map for Mass Market

Mitsubishi Corporation (Tokyo; www.mitsubishi.com) is pleased to announce the release of DiaMap, the first professional-quality three-dimensional digital mapping system to be priced for the mass market.
DiaMap combines high-quality digital color satellite images down-linked directly from the IKONOS low-orbit satellite and elevation data gathered from airborne laser sensors with virtual reality systems, databases, and network technology. DiaMap provides users with a 3D, street-level perspective of buildings, roads and other landmarks, as well as faithfully reproducing city landscapes, including hues and textures.
Mitsubishi Corporation Spatial Information Business Unit is ready to supply 3D digital mapping data of Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, a combined area of 25,000 square kilometers, and plans to expand the area the map covers to other parts of the country as demand grows.
Mitsubishi Corporation has selected the spatial data industry as a strategic area for investment, and will be the first company in the world to offer 3D digital maps to the mass market. Mitsubishi also aims to stimulate growth in this market as a whole by aggressively licensing its products to road and housing cartographers.
