APICS '98 Educational Sessions:
Making it Easy for Attendees to Find What They Need

Helping attendees maximize the APICS '98 educational benefits has been a key objective from the very beginning of the planning stages, according to Arvil J. Sexton, CPIM, conference chair. To do so, the conference educational sessions have been organized into the following 11 "flights" or functional topics:

  • Understanding the Supply Chain explores the components of the supply chain, including advanced planning, supply optimization, demand flow and assessment methodologies.

  • Supply Chain Techniques and Tools enhances day-to-day supply chain functions with topics like integrating sourcing and logistics, customer service and order fulfillment techniques.

  • Information Technology strengthens information technology strategies with sessions on Internet business, Year 2000 issues, software selection and system implementation.

  • Enterprise Planning improves business functions with sessions including sales and operations planning, strategic planning, enterprise resource planning, benchmarking and performance measurements.

  • Operations Planning tightens operations with topics focusing on master production scheduling, capacity requirements planning, distribution and logistics.

  • Operations Support links operational success to topics related to inventory management and supplier relationships.

  • Professional Survival Skills builds the skills that drive career advancement, including team building, communication skills and diversity training.

  • Customer—Driven Strategies heightens customer satisfaction with information from sessions on strategic product delivery, the conversion of customer requirements to products, vendor-managed inventory and collaborative forecasting.

  • Managing Change improves performance during organizational changes with the knowledge gained from these sessions on improving processes, continuous improvement, agile manufacturing and corporate culture.

  • Strategies for Manufacturing Excellence sharpens understanding of Just-in-Time concepts, including kaizen, kanban and setup reduction and theory of constraints topics such as drum-buffer-rope, V-A-T analysis and total quality management.

  • Interactive Learning experiments with SIG Roundtables and extended workshops on lean and agile manufacturing and Internet-based training.

"Setting up the educational program in flights makes it easy for attendees to select the sessions most relevant to their career and personal interests, which makes for a more satisfying conference experience," said Sexton.

APICS Conference Brochure Mails Early

APICS has taken a major step in 1998 to make it easier for conference attendees to plan their individual programs by producing a single program brochure and mailing it in midspring.

"Thanks to the hard work of the APICS '98 conference committee, complete educational session information will be available approximately two months earlier than in the past," said Leona Spencer, APICS marketing project manager. "As a result, conference attendees can make their plans to attend much further in advance than in years past."

The APICS '98 Conference Brochure will be available in May by request. Prospective attendees can be placed on a priority list for the brochure by contacting APICS Customer Service and requesting item #04066. Brochure requests also can be placed on the APICS Web site at http://www.apics.org.
